Weekly Devotional Helping you spend time in Gods Word

Romans 16:16

Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ send greetings.

Thoughts for This Week:

The kiss is still today a form of greeting. It's a symbol of respect and friendship. Five times in the New Testament, Christians are told to greet one another in this way. By Paul's instruction, it's a "holy kiss," while Peter speaks of a "kiss of love." The expression "one another," when used with the kiss, is always in the masculine gender. For example, 1 Thessalonians 5:26 (KJV) expressly instructs: "Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss." In our passage today, Paul is not speaking about the potentially suggestive kissing between women and men, but rather the heartfelt greeting of friends.

In our country, the customary form of greeting is the handshake. When Christians greet one another with a hand shake, they fulfill the spirit of Paul's exhortation. The thought behind our passage today is this: Christians should always remain in a spiritual condition that allows us to greet one another with sincerity.

Questions to Ponder:

When you shake hands with one of God's people does it symbolize respect and friendship? Are you holding back any resentment, animosity, or other negative feelings? What does our passage today say about this attitude? How should we treat other brothers and sisters in Christ?

My Prayer....
Thank you, Almighty God, for your plan to pay my ransom and to liberate me from sin and death. Thank you for the confidence I have because of your incomparable grace given to me through Jesus,If there is anything in me that is not pleasing to you, please remove it, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; ....

    Ephesians 4:22, New International Version

That's a tough one, isn't it?! We each surrendered our heart to God and our old self was crucified with Christ when we became Christians (Rom. 6:6). Jesus reminds us that this surrender is something each of us should do daily (Luke 9:23). We need to put the old sinful life aside every day and choose to live for Jesus in response to God's grace. As we begin this new year, let's make it our spiritual habit to consciously offer ourselves to the lordship of Jesus each day.

Holy and Almighty LORD, my Father in heaven, I want to honor you and ignore the temptations of Satan. Please empower me with your Spirit and capture my heart with your grace as I seek to live each day for you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
